What makes Pet Bereavement Different?
The Relationship is Pure and Simple
Unlike human relationships where there are ups and downs, bitter and sweet moments in the relationships, our relationship with our furbabies is pure, sweet and uncomplicated. We find unbridled joy, peace and comfort with them. They are a source of pride and enrich our lives in so many ways.
It is Trivialised
Pet Loss is often called disenfranchised grief. This is because people often don't realise or acknowledge the intensity and severity of this loss just because who we lost is not a human being. We are often met with insensitive comments like how a pet may be replaceable, or how we can now save money on vet bills. There is also less social and structural support for pet parents who have lost a beloved pet.
We Feel Solely Responsible
Unlike a human being who can tell us what their wishes are, pet parents become the sole decision makers for their furbabies. Many times these decisions are made with the best intentions and with the advise of Veterinarians, however, that does not stop us from feeling is we could have done something more... better... or different. This heavy responsibility weighs on us as pet parents.
